Pronunciación en inglés: el artículo the

¿Cómo pronunciamos el artículo definido the en inglés? Pues depende....

Existen dos formas de pronunciarlo en función del sustantivo que siga al artículo:

• Si la siguiente palabra empieza por un sonido consonántico, lo pronunciaremos como /ðə/
• Si la siguiente palabra empieza por un sonido vocálico, lo pronunciaremos como /ði:/

Ejemplos 

• /ðə/ 
• the book / the people / the ticket 

• /ði:/ 
• the aeroplane / the umbrella / the elephant / the Indian 

Notas

Es importante tener en cuenta que lo importante es el sonido con que empiece el sustantivo que sigue al artículo, no la letra con la que empiece.

Por ejemplo, en el caso de hour, aunque hour empieza por una consonante, el sonido por el que empieza es vocálico /aʊə/ por lo que the se pronunciará como /ði:/. 

Lo mismo ocurre con university. A pesar de empezar por una vocal, el sonido por el que empieza es consonántico, /juːnɪˈvɜːsɪtɪ/ , por lo que the se pronunciará /ðə/

Excepciones

Si queremos enfatizar el the, lo pronunciaremos como /ði:/ aunque la palabra que lo siga no empiece por vocal.
